The Curious Case of Young Sherlock, Moriarty, Mycroft et al

Crafting a classic prequel to the investigative endeavours of Sherlock Holmes, the series delves into a mystery during his younger days that shaped his career. Created by Mathew Parkhill, Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie, the plot searches the origin of one of the most revered analytical minds in the history of detective fiction, interpolating back to the days when the investigator in Sherlock was young and maturing.

The main theme revolves around a haunting event that struck the Holmes family when Sherlock was just a boy that apparently intertwines with a curious case that Sherlock gets involved in concerning murder, missing persons and theft. Pulled out from the gaols by his brother Mycroft, after being thrown in due to his attempts at mastering the art of picking pockets (and returning) went awry, the young and fiercely intelligent Sherlock is obviously frustrated to find himself in the shoes of a scout at Oxford, with the best prospect being graduating to the post of a porter of the college. But that could never be a deterrent to the enterprising Sherlock as knowledge could be gained from quality books that Oxford could never be scarce of. Taking sneak peeks to whatever volumes that he could lay hold of, the young porter enriched his already inquisitive mind with the developments in the world that had evolved.

But as quite a few good things do not have a very happy finale, his adventure with knowledge was sure to suffer a major jolt!

There was a theft in the college. This followed a murder. Queerly, in both, Sherlock got himself involved, suspected........ and finally, once more, found himself behind the prison bars.

Enter Moriarty, a student at the college, a friend to Sherlock by their common interest for the uncommon and with intellect comparable and complement to his friend.

Surely the pen is mightier than the sword, but when two sharp enterprising souls joins force, the iron bars of the gaol are surely not enough!

But a break from the prison might free him, the accusation, however, remains.

So, thus starts the trek through the layers of lies against forces that are sinister yet sober, which  camouflages behind the unspeakably unethical!

The series is a very interesting search on the origin of the investigative mind that had mesmerised the fans of detective narratives through decades.

However, this pilot season of what could be a quite remarkable series, is enjoyable for a slightly different aspect. The search for the intellectual maturity combines with the subtle search for the characters that mature as well, much needed for completing the portraits that could be admired, in case of Sherlock, feared, in case of James Moriarty and become increasingly and happily intriguing, for Mycroft Holmes of the future!

ঠাকুমার ঝুলি: রহস্যের অলিগলি

শ্রাবন্তী এবার গোয়েন্দা চরিত্রে!

ঠাকুমাও বটে!

ঝুলি থেকে তো বেড়াল বেরোয়।

কিন্তু এই ঠাকুমার অন্য ঝুলি..... ঝুলি তো নয়, যেন বুদ্ধির ঝাঁপি!

তবে শুরুটা হয়েছিল বেড়াল দিয়েই।

হয়েছে কি, ঠাকুমা তো বিয়েবাড়ি গেছেন নিমন্ত্রণ রক্ষা করতে। নাতনীর বন্ধুর বিয়ে। কনে বিলেত ফেরত, নাতনীও তাই! কনে বিষ্ণুপুরের নামকরা চৌধুরীবাড়ির মেয়ে। কিন্তু বিয়েবাড়িতেই কনে খুন!

অবশ্য খুনটা কেউ বোঝেনি! শুধু ঠাকুমা পোস্টমর্টেমটা করতে বলল বলেই তো জানাটা গেল, অবশ্য কনের মায়েরও সায় ছিল! কিন্তু এই করেই তো ঠাকুমা বিপদটা ঘরে ডেকে আনলেন। আরেকটা খুন হলো!

হরি! ঠাকুমার বেড়াল। বেলা আর ফণ্টের মা! পোষ্যদের নাম রাখার ধরনেই স্পষ্ট যে এই ঠাকুমা যে সে ঠাকুমা নন। প্রিয় গায়ক, হ্যারি বেলাফন্তের নাম ভেঙে বিড়ালদের নাম! কে রাখে? গিরিজাবালা দেবী, মানে আমাদের ঠাকুমা রাখেন!

কিন্তু নামের কথা পরে হবে! এবার খুনের কথায় আসি!

ঠাকুমা তো খুন সন্দেহ করলেন বিয়েবাড়ির কাণ্ড দেখে। এদিকে খুনি গেল ঘাবড়ে। সে তখন ঠাকুমার আদরের হরিকে খুন করিয়ে তার মৃতদেহের সাথে একটা হুমকি চিরকুট পাঠাল। কিন্তু এইখানেতেই তার হয়ে গেল মস্ত ভুল।

সম্মুখ সমরে নেমে পড়লেন ঠাকুমা। অবশ্য ঠাকুমাই সম্মুখে, খুনি আড়ালে! কিন্তু ঠাকুমার যা পর্যবেক্ষণ ক্ষমতা, খুনি আর কতক্ষণ আড়ালে থাকবে? নিজের শ্বাশুড়ির কাছ থেকে গিরিজাবালা পেয়েছিলেন গোয়েন্দা সার্টিফিকেট, আর তিনি নিজে গোয়েন্দা লেখকের মা, যে ছেলে তার মায়ের আদলেই সৃষ্টি করেছিল তার গোয়েন্দা চরিত্র!

এমন মহিলাকে যে ঠকানো বেশ কঠিন! সাথে আবার অকুতোভয় নাতনী, আর তার সাথে এক ভালোমানুষ সাংবাদিক, উঠতি এবং বেশ অপেশাদার! স্থানীয় পুলিশ অফিসার তো আছেই, তবে ভরসা করার মতো নয় খুনিকে চিনে বের করতে!

এই শেষ চরিত্রটিকে নিয়ে এবার একটা কথা বলে ফেলি বরং এই ময়কায়। এই গোটা রহস্যেঘেরা ধটনাকে হালকা একটা মজার মোড়কে মুড়ে রাখার কৃতিত্বটা যেমন একাধারে সম্রাজ্ঞী বন্দোপাধ্যায়ের কলমের ও অয়ন চক্রবর্তীর পরিচালনার, ঠিক তেমনি যে কয়েকটি অভিনেতা এই মজাটাকে পুরো গল্পটাতে চারিয়ে দিতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন, তার মধ্যে অন্যতম হচ্ছে রাহুল অরুনোদয় ব্যানার্জি অভিনীত পুলিশ অফিসারের চরিত্রটি। কৌতুকে মোড়া এই অনবদ্য চরিত্রটিকে যখন দেখছিলাম, তার পরেপরেই শুনতে পেলাম যে এই ভদ্রলোককে আর নতুন কোনো চরিত্রে দেখতে পাবো না। মনটা খারাপ হয়ে গেছিল! রাহুল এই সিরিজটার মুখ্য চরিত্র না হলেও মুখ্য এক ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করে কাহিনীটিকে প্রাণবন্ত করে রেখেছিলেন! এই প্রাণোচ্ছল কৌতুকের মধ্যে দিয়েই তাঁকে মনে রাখব!

কৌতুকের আরেকটি স্তম্ভ হলো দেবরাজ ভট্টাচার্য! তবে শ্রাবন্তীও অসাধারণ। এত বয়স্কার অভিনয় খুব সহজ ছিল না কিন্তু! তাই এই চেষ্টাটা অবশ্যই প্রশংসনীয়, সাহসী এবং যথেষ্ট পরিণত! চরিত্রটাকে একইসঙ্গে বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত ও আকর্ষণীয় করে তুলেছেন অভিনেত্রী! সাথে অঙ্কিতা মাঝিও সুনিপুণ বিশেষ এক চরিত্রে আর দিব্যাণী মণ্ডলকেও মানিয়ে গিয়েছে ঠাকুমার নাতনি-cum-সহকারী হিসেবে। সহজ ছন্দে চলা এই কাহিনীটি তাই সকলের কাছেই লাগতে পারে বেশ উপভোগ্য!

Sessions with Harlan Coben's Lazarus

Suspense and the hint of supernatural combine as Dr Joel Lazarus strives to find the real reason behind the recent death of his father and the the murder of his twin sister that happened in his younger age.

Traumatising him very early in his life, the murder of his sister had scarred Joel deeply and a closure to the incident was all that he could wish for. Alas, the murder remained a mystery as well as the murderer.

But as the forensic psychiatrist in Joel tried to cope with his trauma later in his life, the world once again seemed to unhinge around him with the sudden suicide of his father, Dr L, a practicing psychiatrist of repute and the inspiration for Joel. As the police tried to close his father's death as suicide, the son had his own apprehension. Added to this were dreaded revelations from queer quarters. There seemed to be links to the murder of his sister as well. But as Joel Lazarus approaches the truth by unveiling the layers of mist that surrounds, grim twists await ahead that takes a toll on the mind as well.

With a thrill that can only be felt as the series nears the finale, the disappointing slow pace of the episodes causes a mar to the interesting theme. However, the season offers a few interesting facets. The title corresponding to any particular episode is designed in a sequence of numbers of a college course, thus keeping the essence of psychological drama alive without a hint of what might happen but ensuring that they essentially unfold the subject much like the chapters of a book. The other aspect is the music by Sarah Warne and her directing 'The Windmills of your Mind' cover by Rumer that keeps the theme resonating throughout with the melody that hypnotises with a calmly poignant appeal.

নিশির ডাক, করতে পারে হতবাক!

বাঙালীরা রবীন্দ্রনাথকে প্রায় সমস্ত সাংস্কৃতিক প্রসঙ্গে তো ব্যবহার করেই, দেখাদেখি বাঙলার অনেক অনুষ্ঠানেও তিনি সদা; উপস্থিত। তাই তিনি IPLএও আছেন (courtesy, শাহরুখ খান ও KKR), আবার যেখানে কোনোদিন খেয়ে জাননি, এমন জায়গাতেও উল্লিখিত (courtesy, মহম্মদ নাজমুদ্দিন, সৃজিত মুখার্জি ও OTT)!

কিন্তু এবার বোধহয় এই random রবীন্দ্রনাথ ব্যাপারটা একটু থামানো দরকার, নয়তো কেউ আবেগে ভেসে খুব শিগগির কবিগুরু Multiverse খুলে গুরুদেবকে বিভিন্ন প্রসঙ্গে জুড়ে দেবে।

যদিও এতটা বাড়াবাড়ি এখানে নেই, তাহলেও বলব গুরুদেবকেই দরকার ছিল কি? এই কারণে বলছি যে, চরিত্রটা দরকার কিন্তু রবিঠাকুরকেই নয়! বরং সেই জায়গায় কোনো কাল্পনিক প্রবীণ সঙ্গীতজ্ঞ ব্যক্তি থাকলেই চলত। আসলে রবীন্দ্রনাথকে দিয়ে যে প্রসঙ্গের অবতারণা করা হয়েছে, আমার মতে (আমার অবশ্য রবীন্দ্রনাথকে নিয়ে সাহিত্যজ্ঞান ছোটোবেলায় সহজ পাঠ, 'শিশু'র কিছু কবিতা ও বড়বেলায় গোরা ও কিছু নাটকের মধ্যেই সীমিত), বাস্তবে এরকম কিছু হওয়াটা কবিগুরুর মতো দূরদৃষ্টসম্পন্ন মানুষের দ্বারা মুশকিল বলে মনে হয়েছে।

তাই পরিচালক (জয়দীপ মুখার্জ্জী) ও আর্য রায় (ভাবনা) ভবিষ্যতে এই সুক্ষ্ম দিকটার দিকে খেয়াল রাখলে কাহিনীটা (শ্রীজিব) এই ছোটোখাটো ত্রুটিগুলো এড়াতে পারত।

শুরুতে গল্পটা কিন্তু বেশ এগোচ্ছিল। ছয় বন্ধুর এক দল একটি গ্রামে এসে হাজির হয়। গ্রামের নাম সোনামুখী। গ্রামটিতে আসার উদ্দেশ্য গবেষণার খাতিরে। সঙ্গীত ্নিয়ে ভিন্ন রকমের গবেষণা আর বিষয় হল রবীন্দ্রনাথের পাঁচ প্রিয় গায়িকা। এই গায়িকাদের মধ্যে একজনের সম্বন্ধে তথ্য সংগ্রহ করতেই এই প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামে তাদের আসা। নিশিগন্ধা নামক সেই সুগায়িকার বিবাহ নাকি এই গ্রামেতেই হয়েছিল কিন্তু ্তারপরেই ইতিহাসে তিনি যেন বিস্মৃত। তাই তাঁর জীবনের বাকি অংশটার সন্ধানেই ছয় বন্ধুর এই গ্রামে হাজির হওয়া।

কিন্তু আসার পথেই তারা জানতে পারে সোনামুখীতে নাকি আছে মৃত্যুর ভয়াল হাতছানি। বাইরের লোকজন এই গ্রাম এড়িয়ে চলে খুব স্বাভাবিক কারণে -  কে আর সেধে অকালমৃত্যু চাইবে? তার উপর গ্রামে ঢুকে জানতে পারা যায় আরেক অদ্ভুত কথা। গ্রামেতে কেউ গান গাইলে, তাকে তাড়া করবে মৃত্যু! এক প্রতিহিংসাপরায়ণ আত্মার রোষে সে প্রাণ হারাতে পারে। কিন্তু সমস্যা হল, বন্ধুদের মধ্যে বেশিরভাগই গ্রামটাতে কিছুদিন কাটাতে চায়। থাকার জায়গা স্থির হয় পুরানো জমিদারবাড়ি, যেখানে নিশিগন্ধার বিয়ে হয়েছিল। বয়সের ভারে জরাজীর্ণ ভগ্নপ্রায় যে বাড়ি দেখলে হয়তো ভূতেরাও ভয় পাবে, এদের কারুর খুব একটা দ্বিধা হয় না সারাদিন ও সারারাত কাটাতে। অবশ্য না হওয়ার একটা কারণ থাকতেও পারে, তারা পৌঁছেছিল রাতে! বোধহয় ঠিক করে বুঝতে পারেনি জায়গাটা। আর সকালে ্কিছু বোঝার আগেই তো ঘটে গেল সাংঘাতিক এক মৃত্যু! একেবারে জমিদারবাড়ির দোরগোড়ায় প্রায়। ব্যস, পুলিশ এসে তাদের জন্য সেখানে থাকাটা, কিছুদিনের জন্য তো বটেই, পাকাপাকি করে দিল!

তারপর যা হয়, দর্শকরা পাবে অশরীরী, রহস্য, মায় জাতিস্মর সম্বলিত এক রোমাঞ্চকর আবহ, আর আমি পেলাম সঙ্গীতের (বিনীত রঞ্জন মৈত্র) অনবদ্য মূর্ছনা, গতিময় সম্পাদনা (সুমিত চৌধুরি), যা পর্বগুলিকে জমাট রেখেছে ও রহস্যে ঘেরা অতিপ্রাকৃত পরিবেশের সাথে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ চলচ্চিত্রায়ণের (টুবান) মনকাড়া মায়াবী আমেজ।

তাই একবারের জন্য দেখাটা সার্থক হবে, কিন্তু বাকিটা পুরোটাই আপনাদের মত!

A tight and crisp prequel that can't be any better.

Inducted into covert operations after being ripped off from his dedicated brotherhood of Navy Seals on grounds of disciplinary actions, Benjamin 'Ben' Edwards, gradually discovers the intricately dark yet strategically concealed side of international intelligence. Working apparently surreptitiously to protect his nation in a joint effort with another espionage agency, the collaboration gets a jolt when a carefully planned operation goes haywire. Tasked with intercepting and countering threats that have the potential to destabilize the world order in terms of nuclear power, retaliations are felt a bit too immediate as well as improbably fast! Inflicting damages to the team not only in terms of casualties, but their morals are also shaken with a sense of distrust clouding the minds of Ben and several members of the unit that are left breathing. With enemies striking hard and fast and those trusted appearing to switch allegiance, the motive and the path chosen suddenly become a bit less simple than what that was promised at the start.

Will Ben be able to trace the truth out of the web of lies and deceit? Will he be able to keep the mind steady in the world where trust gives way to cause that proves dangerously personal? Can he avenge the lives that are lost or will the revelations be shaping him anew?

The viewers of the primary series might take a rough guess but might brace themselves for a twist as well, as though the series means to reveal the character of Ben but the better part of unraveling him is left for the audience to ruminate². This keeps the show enthralling and I must say that I liked the intensity that remains consistent and the gripping thrill that I personally feel, surpasses the primary immensely.

The boldly rebellious demeanour of Taylor Kitsch fascinatingly contrasted with the grimly deceptive looks of Robert Wisdom that elevated the thrill of the drama to greater heights with a solid support from Tom Hopper with his impeccable portraiture of the ruthlessly disciplined fighter.

Based on characters created by Jack Carr, this origin story, is therefore, recommended as a thrilling, if not impressively engrossing watch.

অ্যাডভোকেট অচিন্ত্য আইচ: আইনের আয়নায়!

বিছানায় পড়ে থাকা এক রক্তাক্ত দেহ, এক অভিযুক্ত ড্রাইভার, জনতার দরবার, ময়নাতদন্তে পাওয়া কিছু তথ্য, পুরুষবিদ্বেষী এক দাপুটে মহিলা উকিল নিযুক্ত সরকারপক্ষে বিচারের দাবীতে! ব্যস, আর কি চাই? অভিযুক্তের দোষী সাব্যস্ত হতে তো আর কোনো বাধাই নেই! জনতা তো রায় দিয়েই দিয়েছে! বিচারেও তাই ধার্য হল। অভিযুক্ত দোষী! অতএব শাস্তি চরম দণ্ড! তাই হুকুম হল ফাঁসির! জনতা ওউকিল, উভয়েই খুশি!

কিন্তু বাদ সাধল এক নাছোড় উকিল। একটা ছোট্ট বিসদৃশতা, আর তার থেকেই নতুন করে প্রমাণ যোগাড় করে বিচারের রায়কে আবার একবার খতিয়ে দেখার আর্জি! তাই আবার শুরু হলো তদন্ত। আবার আদালত বসল বিচার করতে! বেরিয়ে এল কিছু চাঞ্চল্যকর তথ্য! এই সাহসী সিদ্ধান্তের জেরে আর সত্যকে বের করতে অ্যাডভোকেট অচিন্ত্য আইচ শুরু করলো এক অসম লড়াই! সাথে থাকল কয়েকজন শুভাকাঙ্খী আর ফাউ হিসেবে জুটল জনরোষ! ঝামেলা বাড়াতে শুরু হল খুচরো কিছু উৎপাত! তার মধ্যেই চলল অচিন্ত্যর লড়াই! এ যেন হেরে যাওয়ার আগে ফুরিয়ে না যাওয়ার তাগিদ।

রহস্যের মোড়কে ঘেরা এই সিজন বেকার কোনো সময় নষ্ট না করে এক সাবলীল গতিতে এগিয়েছে! কয়েক জায়গায় ভুলত্রুটি চোখে পড়তেই পারে, কিন্তু বিষয়ের প্রাসঙ্গিকতায় তাকে গুরুত্ব না দিলেও চলবে! যে সমাজে মহিলাদের সন্দেহজনক মৃত্যুর দায় আর্থসামাজিক স্তরের পিছনের দিকের মানুষের উপর চাপিয়ে দেওয়াটা দস্তুর, সেখানে এরকম কিছু ঘটনাকে আমাদের সামনে তুলে আনাটা বোধহয় সময়ে সময়ে দরকার! তার সাথে বোধহয় মানুষের মনের ঘৃণার দিকটাকে প্রয়োজন চিনিয়ে দেওয়ার, কারণ মানবসভ্যতার সবচেয়ে ভয়ানক প্রবৃত্তি বোধহয় এই রিপুটি যা যুক্তিবুদ্ধির তোয়াক্কা না করে মুহুর্তের মধ্যে দোষীকে ভুলে নিরপরাধকে দোষী বানিয়ে ফেলতে পারে! দর্শকদের চোখটা এভাবে কল্পনার জগতে খুলে দিতে পারলে বাস্তবেও হয়তো একদিন আশপাশের অমানবিকতার বিরুদ্ধে তারা নতুন আঙ্গিকে প্রশ্ন করতে পারবে!

ছয় পর্বের তথ্যচিত্রটির মোট দৈর্ঘ্যের তুলনায় কম তথ্য, প্রচুর বক্তব্য, একই ঘটনা, ছবি ও দৃশ্যের বারংবার পুনরাবৃত্তি এবং সিদ্ধান্ত পেশ করার বিরক্তিকর তাগিদ - বলা যায় এটাই যেন তথ্যচিত্রটির ভাবনার মূল সারাংশ! কিন্তু এমন তো হওয়ার ছিল না! কলকাতার রবিনসন স্ট্রিটে উন্মোচিত হওয়া চাঞ্চল্যকর ঘটনা নিয়ে তথ্যচিত্র তো হবে কৌতুহলোদ্দীপক!

কিন্তু কই, সেরকম কিছু কি আদৌ হলো? মনে তো হলো না!

বাকিটা বলার আগে বরং আরেকবার ফিরে যাই অতীতে, ২০১৫ সালের জটিল সেই সকালে! যেদিন হঠাৎ রবিনসন স্ট্রিটের অরবিন্দ দের বাসভবন থেকে উদ্ধার হলো বাড়ির মালিকের অগ্নিদগ্ধ দেহ। বাড়ির শৌচালয় থেকে দেহ উদ্ধারের পর পুলিশের কাছে জেরা চলাকালীন অরবিন্দবাবুর ছেলে, পার্থ দে-র কথায় উঠে আসে আরেক চাঞ্চল্যকর তথ্য - পার্থবাবুর দিদি আর তাঁদের পোষা দুই কুকুর নাকি তাঁর ঘরেই আছে! কথামতো আরেক দফা তল্লাশি চালিয়ে পুলিশের কাছে উদ্ঘাটিত হয় আরেক ভয়ানক সত্যের - পার্থবাবু মাসছয়েক নিজের ঘরের বিছানায় একটি মানুষের কঙ্কাল ও সেই ঘরেতেই দুটি জন্তুর কঙ্কালের সাথে বাস করছেন আর তাঁর কথামতো সেগুলি তাঁর দিদি ও বাড়ির দুই পোষ্যের! ব্যস, এবার শুরু হলো তোলপাড়। লোকেদের মুখে, কাগজের পাতায়, তখন শুধু একটাই খবর - পার্থ দে! যেটুকু তথ্য পাওয়া যেতে লাগল, তার উপর ভিত্তি করে মিডিয়াতেও তালে তাল মিলিয়ে চললো চুলচেরা বিশ্লেষণ, এবং, অবশ্যই, পার্থবাবুর বিচার!

তবে গুজব বাদ দিয়ে যে প্রশ্নগুলো ওঠা প্রয়োজন ছিল, এবং, উঠেছিল, তা হল,

কঙ্কালগুলো কাদের?

একটা মানুষ কি করে মৃত ব্যক্তির কঙ্কালের সাথে প্রায় মাসছয়েক একই ঘরে কাটাতে পারে, ভাবা দরকার যে কেউ যদি জানতে না পারত, আরো কতোদিন কেটে যেত এভাবে?

মানুষ আর কুকুরগুলোর মৃত্যু হলো, মৃতদেহগুলো কঙ্কালে পরিণত হলো, কিন্তু কোনোরকম গন্ধ বেরোল না কি করে?

অরবিন্দবাবুর আত্মহত্যার কারণ কি?

এই পরিস্থিতিতে বাজার দোকান করা ও বাইরের দুনিয়ার সাথে যোগাযোগ কি করে বজায় রাখা হতো?

এরকম হাজারো প্রশ্ন লোকের মনে হয়েছিল। আমারও হয়েছিল। কিন্তু তখন কেন জানিনা আমি নিজে খবরটা খুব একটা মনোযোগ দিয়ে নাড়াচাড়া করিনি। মনের মধ্যে পার্থবাবুর নামটা ও কঙ্কালকাণ্ডের স্মৃতি আবছা করে শুধু কিছুটা রয়ে গেছিল।

তাই এবার যখন শুনলাম যে ঘটনাটা নিয়ে একটা তথ্যচিত্র হবে, খুব আগ্রহের সাথে দেখতে বসলাম এই ভেবে যে পুরো ঘটনাটা এবার বোধহয় বুঝতে পারব।

কিন্তু কোথায় কি? মনোবিজ্ঞানী, মনোরোগ বিশেষজ্ঞদের সাক্ষাৎকারকে প্রধান করে যে তথ্যচিত্র দেখলাম, সেটাতে পার্থবাবুর মনটাকে হয়তো চিনলাম কিন্তু ঘটনাটা যেন যেই তিমির সেই তিমিরেই রইল। এমনকি, এত বেশি সিদ্ধান্ত শুনলাম যে মনে হলো কিছুটা যেন আগে থেকেই ভেবে রাখা হয়েছিল কোন দিকটাকটাকে বেশি প্রাধান্য দেওয়া হবে। কমলেশ্বর মুখার্জ্জী খানিকটা যেন ব্যক্তিকে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে ফেললেন মূল বিষয় হিসেবে। কিন্তু তাহলে তো সিরিজটির নামকরণে গলদ থেকে যায়। মানতাম, যদি শুধুমাত্র পার্থ দে-কে অবলম্বন করে তথ্যচিত্র বানানো হতো। কিন্তু এখানে তো ঘটনাটা কেন্দ্রীয়, বাকিটা গৌন না হলেও মূখ্য তো বলতে পারি না! হতে পারে যে আমার চিন্তাটা ভুল, তবে কঙ্কালগুলো কি করে প্রমাণ হলো কাদের, অরবিন্দবাবুর মৃত্যু আর মৃতদেহ থেকে ঘরের মধ্যে কঙ্কালে রুপান্তর হওয়াটার বিজ্ঞানসম্মত আলোচনা কেন হলো না? যেখানে স্বীকার করা হয়েছে দেশে মনোরোগ চিকিৎসা তুলনামূলকভাবে অনেকটাই নবীন - আনুমানিক ৭০ বছরের খানিকটা বেশি হবে - সেখানে প্রবীণ কিছু বৈজ্ঞানিক উপায় যেমন রসায়ন ও জীববিজ্ঞান, যেগুলো দিয়ে এই সমস্ত প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দেওয়া যেত, সেগুলিকে এরকম সরিয়ে রাখার প্রয়োজন ছিল কি? মানসিক অবস্থা নিয়ে আলোচনার মাঝে অনাবশ্যক কবিতাই বা কেন পাঠ করার দরকার হলো কমলেশ্বর মুখার্জ্জীর গলায়?

অল্প তথ্য ও অনেকটা ধারনা দিয়ে তৈরি এই তথ্যচিত্র মনে হলো কোভিডের সময়ে নির্মিত। পার্থবাবুর মানসিক দিকটাকে নিঃসন্দেহে অনেকটাই তুলে ধরা হয়েছে, কিন্তু তবু অনেক কিছুই রয়ে গেল অন্ধকারে। তথ্যের অপ্রতুলতা ছাড়াও তথ্যের একপেশে ভাব ব্যাপারটাকে অনেকটাই ক্লান্তিকর করে দিল! তবে পাওনা একটাই - নির্মিত চরিত্রকে শুধু মুকাভিনয় দ্বারা বিভিন্ন মানসিক রূপের বহিঃপ্রকাশ সমেত নিপুণভাবে মেলে ধরা লোকনাথ দে ও অময় দেবরায়ের পেশাদার অভিনয়ের যুগলবন্দী।

কলকাতার রহস্যের মাঝে মিঃ কলকেতা

ভেবেছিলাম দারুন কিছু একটা ব্যাপার হবে নিশ্চয়। কলকাতার অলিগলিতে লুকিয়ে থাকা রহস্যের হাতছানি থাকবে। ঋত্বিক আছে তো, ঠিক জমিয়ে দেবে! কিন্তু কোথায় কি! জমলো না তো পুরোটা! গল্পটা (সৌগত বাসু) দারুন, যেন কলকাতার ন্যাশনাল ট্রেজার, সম্পাদনা (রবিরঞ্জন মৈত্র) ঝরঝরে ও মজাদার সুরেতে ভরা গান, ধ্বনির পরিপাটি মিশ্রণে (শুভদীপ গুহ, আনিস আহমেদ, অভি, সৃজন দেব) পরিবেশিত রহস্যের আবহ!

কিন্তু ওই যে, ন্যাশনাল ট্রেজার ভাবলাম বলেই বোধহয় গোলমালটা পাকালাম। কলকাতার কোন নির্দিষ্ট গুপ্ত জায়গায় লুকিয়ে রাখা মসলিনের সন্ধান পাওয়াটা তো চাট্টিখানি কথা নয়! ইতিহাসটা ঠিক করে বোঝানো দরকার। কাহিনীটা এইখানেই কিরকম খাপছাড়া হয়ে গেছে! রহস্যটা রোমাঞ্চ জাগাতে পারে নি। তার উপর তুখোড় তিনজন অভিনেতা (ঋত্বিক চক্রবর্তী, দেবেশ রায়চৌধুরী, কৌশিক সেন) থাকা সত্ত্বেও তাদের ঠিক করে ব্যবহার করা হয়নি আমার মতে। গতিটাও কিন্তু বেশ অগোছালো লাগলো। রহস্যের মধ্যে আটকে গিয়ে পরিচালক (সুরজিৎ চট্টোপাধ্যায়) নিজেই যেন নিজেকে হারিয়ে ফেলেছেন মাঝপথে। রহস্যটা সাধারন হলেও শুধুমাত্র সপরিবারে দেখার মতো করে বানানোর জন্য পরিচালককে ধন্যবাদ জানাই। অনুরোধ একটাই সিরিজটা সম্বন্ধে, আবার ফিরে আসার যে ইঙ্গিতটা পেলাম এবার, এই সিজনের খামতিগুলো যদি ভবিষ্যতে শুধরে নেওয়া যায়, বিষয়বস্তু অনুযায়ী, এই সিরিজ, আমার মতে, ক্রমান্বয়ে দর্শক সংখ্যা বাড়ানোর ক্ষমতা রাখে!

কুমুদিনী ভবন, হোচি সরকার ও অনেকগুলি রহস্য

কুমুদিনী ভবনে রহস্য দেখা দিয়েছে। মানে কুমুদিনী ভবন নামক মহিলাদের মেসটিতে ভীষণ সব কাণ্ড ঘটছে। বাড়িটিতে নানা বয়সের ও বিভিন্ন পরিচয়ের মহিলাদের ভাড়া দিয়ে থাকেন বাড়ির কর্ত্রী, মাসিমা। সাথে বাড়ির পরিচারিকা ও নিজের অনাথ ও অসুস্থ নাতি! মোটামুটি নিজের বাড়ির মতো ঘরোয়া করে থাকার পরিবেশ। দিনগুলো সবাই মিলে হইচই করেই কাটিয়ে দিতো। আপাত ঝামেলাহীন বাড়িটিকে কেন্দ্র করে পরপর তিনটে খুনই তাই পরিস্থিতিটা ঘোরালো করে দিলো! একসাথে তিনটে খুন - আবার ঠিক খুনের দিনটাতেই আগমন হয় এক অচেনা মহিলার - অফিসার হোচি সরকার তো চাপে পড়বেই! একে তো তিনটে খুনের জট, তার উপর তিনি আবার মৃতদেহ সহ্য করতে পারেন না, কি যে করবেন কে জানে?

অবশ্য পুরোটা যদি জানতেই হয় তবে তো দেখতেই হবে বাকি ব্যাপারগুলো। অম্বরীশ ভট্টাচার্য ও উষসী রায়ের অভিনীত সিরিজটি শুধু অভিনয়ের খাতিরেই খুব উপভোগ্য। রহস্যটা জমাটও থেকেছে অর্কদীপ মল্লিকা নাথের গতিময় পরিচালনার জাদুতে। হাসিঠাট্টার মোড়কে রহস্যের উপস্থাপনা করে গোয়েন্দা কাহিনীটিকে আরো আকর্ষণীয় করে তোলা হয়েছে।

Cracking mysteries with The Mentalist

The acute interpreter of human behaviour and gestures will keep you engrossed in this thrilling drama by the risks he takes, the traps he sets and the antics he plays. Just completed watching the thrill laced adventure, which, on the one hand, has mystery as the central element, while on the other, has a fair share of drama as well. Essentially a police procedural, but as the name suggests, the theme is focussed on the single investigator. Once, a con artist, the alleged psychic with a keen insight into behaviours, turned into a consultant to the authorities in nabbing the scariest of criminals, solving the strangest of crimes, while secretly harbouring his chief agenda of avenging the murder of his wife and daughter.

Created by Bruno Heller, the seven part series is a study of human psychology that reveals the various shades of human emotions in the grimmest of circumstances. Simon Baker plays the sauve protagonist with keen observational power in Patrick Jane who is kind on the one hand, while opportunistic in the other, but alway maintaining a principle of striking the bad while defending his own, though at times, his actions will raise serious doubts as to his courage. Complimenting him with a predictable yet assured stance is Robin Tunney as Teresa Lisbon, introduced very early as the boss of Jane, balancing her colleagues with a smiling face and a professional astuteness. The natural interrogator in Kimbal Cho is trimmed to perfection by the impassive Tim Kang. The cheerful Owain Yeoman as the optimistic Wayne Rigsby and the naive countenance of Amanda Righetti as the sweetly sentimental Grace Van Pelt, who were regular in the initial few seasons but appeared intermittently as the show gradually converged, complimented the serious tone by their spontaneous romance, blended quite happily with the correct measure of humour.

The investigative methods are really thrilling to watch but the protagonist possessing the mental ability that stretches the limits of imagination, keeps reality at bay and though the suspense and mystery are retained but it is intense drama that ultimately entertains.

Homestay Murders: খুনির সাথে, খুনের মাঝে, একই বাড়িতে

গল্পটা কিন্তু মন্দ না! খুন আছে, রহস্য আছে, চুরিও আছে, আর গোয়েন্দা তো আছেই! তবে মুশকিলটা হলো অন্য জায়গায়। গল্পটাতে দেখানো হয়েছে কোনো এক পাহাড়ী নির্জন পরিবেশে এক পান্থশালায় খুন হয়। জনবসতি থেকে অনেকটা উপরে অবস্থিত জায়গাটায় প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ ঘটলে জনসংযোগ প্রায় বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যায়। তো খুন এরকম জায়গায় হলে, স্বাভাবিকভাবেই পান্থশালার লোকজনেরা নিজেদের মধ্যেই কাউকে খুনি সন্দেহ করবে! তৈরি হবে অবিশ্বাস, আশঙ্কা ও ভয়ের বাতাবরণ! গোয়েন্দা ও আততায়ীর মুখোশ পড়া চেহারাগুলোর আড়ালে শুরু হবে লুকিয়ে না থাকা মানুষগুলোর মধ্যে এক রুদ্ধশ্বাস লুকোচুরি খেলা জেতার পরীক্ষা। তার সাথে তো আছেই অতীত ও বর্তমানের ধূসর অধ্যায়ের আরো কিছু ইঙ্গিতবাহী ঘটনার চমক। তো এতটা দেখে আমার মাউসট্র্যাপ নাটকটা মনে পড়াটাই বোধহয় উচিত! মিল তো একটা অবশ্যই আছে! কিন্তু সমস্যাটা সেখানে নয়। বিশ্বের বিখ্যাত কোনো গল্প অবলম্বন করাই যায়। অনেক পরিচালক নিজেদের মতো করে বিভিন্ন সময় ও স্থানোপযোগী করে কাহিনীর রুপান্তর করেছেন। ভবিষ্যতেও এমনটা হওয়া খুব স্বাভাবিক! ব্যাপারটা প্লটের সর্বকালের সেরাদের মধ্যে থাকার লক্ষণ! তাই তা নিয়ে কোনো নালিশ নেই কারুর কাছে। কিন্তু, তা বলে গতিটা হবে এত নিস্তেজ? এত সাদামাটা করে প্লটের বুনন হবে? আটকে থাকা নিরুপায় নির্দোষ মানুষগুলোর দমবন্ধ অবস্থাটা কোনোভাবেই ফুটে উঠবে না সম্যকভাবে? এত সরলীকিকরণ করতে হবে জায়গায় জায়গায় কোনোরকম ভাবনাচিন্তা ছাড়াই? গল্পের মধ্যে এত অসম্পূর্ণতা থাকে কি করে? সময়ের হিসেব তো গোঁজামিলে ভরপুর মনে হল! অর্জুন চক্রবর্তী অভিনয়টা ঠিক রাখার অনেক চেষ্টা করলেও, বাকিদের চালচলন কিরকম যেন দায়সারা গোছের! সোহিনী সরকার তো দাঁত দিয়ে ক্রমাগত নখ খেয়ে কিরকম ঘুমের ঘোরে যেন চিবিয়ে চিবিয়ে সংলাপ আওড়ে চললেন। বোধহয় সাজানোটা খুব পরিপাটি করার দিকেই শুধু মন দেওয়ায়, মানে সায়ন্তন ঘোষালের হাতে পরিচালনা থাকলে যে ছিমছাম উপহারটা পাওনা হয়, দরকারী জটিলতাগুলো কিন্তু পরিচালক এড়িয়ে গিয়ে গোলমাল করে ফেলেছেন জায়গায় জায়গায়।

তবে একটা ব্যাপারে কিন্তু এই সিরিজটা দেখা, থুড়ি, শোনাটা সার্থক। সিরিজটার অসামান্য সুর, ধ্বনি ও তাদের সংযোগ মন ভরিয়ে দেবে। শিবাশীষ ব্যানার্জ্জীর ওপেনিং স্কোর থেকে অয়ন ভটচাজের দুরন্ত মিক্সিং, সাথে সায়ন বাইরি, তারপর সম্রাট রায় একটা পর্বে এবং সৌরভ বোসের সম্পাদনার সুরের বিভাগে কোনো গলদ নেই। তাই আমার খারাপ নেটওয়ার্কে সিরিজটা আরো অসহ্য দেখতে লাগলেও, শুনতে আদৌ মন্দ লাগেনি তার সুরের জোরালো ঝংকার!

এটা কি রাজনীতি হল?

রাজনীতি দেখলাম।

শুরুতেই এক মহিলার গাড়ি অ্যাক্সিডেণ্টে আপাদমস্তক ক্ষতবিক্ষত অবস্থায় হাসপাতালে শয্যা। প্রাণে বাঁচলেও স্মৃতি তার সাময়িকভাবে লোপ পায়। তবে পুরোপুরি লোপ পায় বলাটা ঠিক নয় - মাঝে মধ্যে মোবাইলের মিসড কলের মতো জানান দিয়ে যায় তার উপস্থিতি। তো সেই প্রায় বিস্মৃত ঘটনার কিছু কিছু ঝলক মনে পড়িয়ে দেয় মহিলাকে যে যেদিন দুর্ঘটনা ঘটেছিল, তখন ড্রাইভারের জায়গায় আরেকজন বসেছিল। কিন্তু চেনা পরিচিতদের সাথে এই ব্যাপারে আলোচনা হলে তারা বলেই চলে যে গাড়িতে সাথে শুধু ড্রাইভার ছিল। ব্যাপারটা বেশ সন্দেহজনক ঠেকে মেয়েটির কাছে। তার উপর তার মোবাইলে কোথাকার কোন জালি অনির্বাণের মেসেজ আসতেই থাকে যা তার সন্দেহকে আরো জোরদার করে। এরপর সত্যটাকে বার করতে চলে গুছিয়ে প্রয়াস।

তো এই পর্যন্ত পড়ে যদি পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন আসে সিরিজটির নামকরণের যথার্থতা নিয়ে, তখন এর মধ্যে যে রাজনীতি কোথায় ঢুকল, সেটা বোঝাই দায় হবে। মানলাম, নায়িকার পিতা রাজনীতিক, গোটা পরিবার, অধিকাংশ পরিচিতজন রাজনীতির সমুদ্রে স্নান করে, কিন্তু যেখানে ঘটনাটা আসলে একটি রহস্যের, সেখানে অকারণ জলঘোলা করাটা কি আদৌ দরকার? কাহিনীতে জোর করে রাজনীতির বান ডাকিয়ে একটা ঠিকঠাক রহস্য গল্পকে কিরকম বেকার করে দিলো।

অবশ্য পুরোটা দেখে সাতকাণ্ড রামায়ণ পড়ে রাবণ কার খুড়তুতো বোন জাতীয় প্রশ্ন উঠবে না কারণ সাত পর্বের সপ্তম পর্বে রাজনীতির পঙ্কিল রূপটা অবশেষে প্রকাশ পাবে, কিন্তু তবুও বলবো কাহিনীটি আদপে রহস্যের, তাকে কোনোভাবেই পলিটিকাল ড্রামা বলাটা ঠিক নয়। পরের সিজনে যদি রাজনীতিকে মুখ্য করে দেখানো হয়, তখন না হয় বলব বুঝলে। ততদিন পর্যন্ত, বলতে বাধ্য হচ্ছি, নামকরণ অসার্থক।

অভিনয় প্রসঙ্গে প্রথমেই বলি কৌশিক গাঙ্গুলির কথা। ভদ্রলোক পরিচালনা নিয়ে ছিলেন, বেশ ছিলেন, অভিনয়ের দিকটা অন্যদের উপর ছাড়লেই ঠিক করতেন বোধহয়। অপরদিকে দিতিপ্রিয়া রায় ও অর্জুন চক্রবর্তী প্রচুর চেষ্টা করেছেন কিছু করার, প্রথমজন তো বটেই, কিন্তু রহস্য ও রাজনীতির গোলমালে পুরোটাই যেন গুলিয়ে চমকগুলোকে মৃদু করে দিয়েছে। মধ্যিখান থেকে কনীনিকা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় মানানসই চরিত্র পেয়ে চমৎকার ছাপ রেখে দিলেন পরিমিত অভিনয়ের।

জমজমাট প্লটের প্রচুর উপকরণ ছিল, শুধু লক্ষ্যটা স্থির না হওয়াতে রান্নাটা মনের মতো হলো না। তাই সৌরভ মুখোপাধ্যায়কে অনুরোধ করব, পরের সিজন থেকে নামটা যদি খেয়াল রেখে পরিচালনা করা হয়, তাহলে খুশি হবো।

Dahaad: the stifled cry for justice

Sonakshi Sinha and Vijay Verma locked horns in this nerve wreaking manhunt for the serial killer who is sly as a fox with an obsession like a maniac.

Luring innocent girls into his honeytrap of false hope, Anand Swarnakar picked his preys, choosing mainly those who were emotionally estranged from their families besides being socially compromised. Fulfilling his lustful desires, he kills his unsuspecting victims in ways that forces the authorities to certify these as suicides. This psychopath concocts a plan so cunning that investigator that thinks different is also baffled by the locked-room nature of the suspected murders. Leading a dual life of a respectable teacher and the responsible husband and father, the unchallenged Anand continued his killing spree silently yet regularly.

But one of these cases suddenly got the attention of the stubborn sub-inspector, Anjali of the Mandawa police station, whose determination seemed to equal the murderous obsession of Anand and then began the chase to hunt for suspects with barest of evidences to start with and the fate of many lives hanging at the balance.

The series with the murderer revealed very early was nonetheless gripping, thanks to the fantastic direction of the director duo of Ruchika Oberoi and Reema Kagti who weaved the murder mystery into the peaking tension and kept the audience guessing of the outcome till the most opportune moment. Added to this is the fabulous performance by Sonakshi Sinha in the role of the police officer hailing from the local Rajasthani family, with a grit to bring justice to the deserved, while tirelessly fighting the social ills of class and gender distinctions that is served free in this nation of varied notions. With a dialect perfected to blend in with the role, her entire performance was superbly natural and critically awesome. Equally awesome is Vijay Verma in his role of the crooked psychopath. His composed mannerism hiding the methodical sadist inside will be sure to bring shivers down the spine as with each appearance his demeneaor becomes increasingly chilling. Supporting with another significant performance, Gulshan Devaiah portrays the local police chief with a responsible attitude and a rational sense of justice. Devaiah is perfect and his mannerism is so realistic that scenes of him handling his juniors, his family and kids on various occasions, will bring to fore the true versatility of the actor and the class of officers he represents while earning reverence for the character he plays. Sohum Shah is the other noteworthy supporting cast among others who will stand apart for the accurate act of the insecured individual, demoted in his professional life and left to choose between ambition, camaraderie and responsibilities at every turn of his existence. Pitching in with perfection, the opening score by Tarana Marwah and Gaurav Raina sets the haunting tone of suspense to resonate right from the very beginning.

Thus, the series that starts with mysterious murders and is essentially a psychological thriller is a must watch not only for the deceptive suspense but also for the subtle message that the story reminds of - the horrific plight of women subjected to the deceits of society and the evil curse of irrational norms.

Gaslight: Where suspense reigns while secrets overwhelm!

Saw Gaslight, streaming in Disney+ Hotstar. Apparently advertised as a Sara Ali Khan starrer spine chiller, undoubtedly Vikrant Massey steals the limelight. With his naturally naive looks, there can be no other artist better suited for the role than Massey with his deceptive demeanour. He is truly the best thing to watch in this film. Chitrangada Singh also plays her part well and looks convincing throughout, maintaining the veil of secrecy that the film demands.

Secrecy seems to be the theme of the story and the majority of the characters seem to harbour something, hidden from others. Strange happenings increase the suspense and twists in the plot keeps the interest growing.

A princess is invited home by her father, the king, whom she hates! But when the time comes for the arrival of the estranged daughter, the father goes missing! Reportedly on a business trip, his phone is unreachable and nobody seems to know where he has actually gone. Surprisingly, the residents of the royal palace, including the queen seems less bothered. The police, too, is apparently not too keen to investigate. The paraplegic princess, thus returning home, finds herself surrounded by mostly strangers and the stepmother, the queen, whom she very naturally despises. Her state of mind is even more shaken as she is haunted apparently by visions of her father in the mansion in the nights that not only questions her sanity but also brews doubts as to the whereabouts of the king, who had still remained untraceable!

Directed by Pavan Kirpalani, the mystery, which is brewed, is though old and almost predictive, would still have been enjoyable, if all the doubts raised, by the very nature of the storyline was clarified as the case is wrapped and the truth revealed.

But nonetheless, this Vikrant Massey powered show is augmented in suspense by the art decor of Apurva Bhagat and Ashish Naik and the touch ups by Avinash Pawar. So, the audience might immerse themselves in the haunting charm of royalty in ruins but will be advised to not wish for a wholesome entertainment!

Murder by the Sea: হত্যা আর পুরী!

বাঙালী চিত্রপরিচালকদের মধ্যে অঞ্জন দত্তের পরিচালিত ছায়াছবিগুলিকে অসাধারন কেউ বলবে না বোধহয়। তবে সাধারন বলার পরেও তার মধ্যে এমন কিছু ব্যাপার থাকে যেগুলো আমার চোখে ব্যক্তিগতভাবে আকর্ষণীয় লাগে। তার মধ্যে অন্যতম হচ্ছে স্থান নির্বাচন। উত্তরবঙ্গের পাহাড় ও কলকাতার গলির মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ থেকে শুধুমাত্র মানুষজন আর তাদের আবেগ ও অনুভূতিকে প্রাধান্য দিয়েও যে ছায়াছবি নির্মাণ করা সম্ভব, বোধহয় খুব বেশি পরিচালক ভাবতেও পারেন না। গল্পের স্থানগুলোর ভীষনভাবে বাঙালী পরিবেশ আরও বেশি আকর্ষন করে ও খুব অন্তরঙ্গ করে দেয় ঘটনাগুলোর সাথে। এতদিন তাই কলকাতা ও উত্তরবঙ্গের মানুষজনের সহজাত ও মাঝেমধ্যে অতিমাত্রায় অমার্জিত বাঙালীত্বের স্বাদ দিব্যি লাগছিল। সমুদ্রসৈকতের স্বাদটাও তার সাথে যোগ করে এবার যুক্ত হলো পুরী।

সঠিকভাবে দেখলে পুরীকে ঊড়িষ্যার শহর বলা উচিৎ, কিন্তু সমুদ্রের ধারে বঙ্গোপসাগরের এই পাড়টি ভীষনভাবে বাঙালীদের আপনার। জায়গাটি ঘিরে রহস্যের জাল বোনার জন্য পরিচালককে ধন্যবাদ। রহস্যের শুরুটাও সমুদ্রের পাড়ে এক গুলিবিদ্ধ লাশ থেকে। জলেতে ভিজে থাকা মৃত ব্যক্তিটিকে সাগর সৈকতের বালির মধ্যে আচমকা আবিষ্কার করেন স্নায়বিক রোগে পর্যুদস্ত কিন্তু রহস্য রোমাঞ্চ কাহিনীর এক জনপ্রিয় লেখিকা। আশপাশের কিছু ঘটনা ও চরিত্র লেখিকাকে আরও সন্দিহান করে তোলে। হত্যার কারনটা জানতে তিনি হয়ে ওঠেন বদ্ধপরিকর। মনে হয়, এতদিন তিনি যা কল্পনা করে লিখতেন, ঠিক যেন সেরকম কাহিনীর কোনো জায়গায় তিনি ঢুকে পড়েছেন। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তিনি হয় পড়েন কৌতুহলী। তার মধ্যে যোগ হয় অতীতের কিছু ফেলে আসা ঘটনার রেশ। নিজের অজান্তেই তিনি জড়িয়ে পড়েন অন্ধকার এক রহস্যের পরিবেশে। অতীত ও বর্তমান এক হয়ে তৈরি হয় এক জটিল সমস্যা যা অপরিচিতকে যেমন আপন করে তোলে, চেনা মানুষের লুকোনো কিছু অজানা ঘটনা বেরিয়ে আসে। আচমকা আড়াল থেকে আসে হামলা। এতটা হয়ে ঠিকই ছিল। অনন্যা চ্যাটার্জীর অভিনয়, সুপ্রভাত দাসের পার্শ্বচরিত্রে সাবলীল উপস্থিতি, অঞ্জন দত্তের কাহিনী রহস্যের জালটা গুছিয়ে বুনেছিল। কিন্তু বাদ সাধল সংলাপের আধিক্য এবং এক প্রসঙ্গ বারবার অবতরণ করার প্রবনতা যে অভ্যেসটা পরিচালক বোধহয় কিছুতেই ছাড়তে চাইছেন না। এই জায়গাটা যদি একটু খেয়াল রাখা যায়, পরবর্তী পরিবেশনা অবশ্যই অনেক বেশি রোমাঞ্চকর হবে।

পুরোটা দেখে তবে একটা কথাই বলব যে সিরিজটির বড় প্রাপ্তি হচ্ছে পুরী। অঞ্জন দত্তের ভিন্নমাত্রার ভাবনায় ও প্রভাতেন্দু মণ্ডলের চিত্রগ্রহণে রাতের পুরী, সমুদ্রের দিক থেকে শহরের ড্রোন শট, এক অদেখা সৌন্দর্য উপহার দিয়েছে। নীল দত্তের পরিচালনায় আবহ সঙ্গীত আরেকটি বড় প্রাপ্তি। এই ব্যাপারটায় অঞ্জন দত্তের পরিচালনা হলে আমার কাছে বরাবরের আকর্ষন থাকে। তাই সিরিজটি দেখুন। তবে রহস্যের জট থেকে আবহের রোমাঞ্চ নিশ্চিতভাবে বেশি মজা দেবে।

If you manage to bear the 1^st 2 episodes, which are actually a bit boring, you will be all set for a thrill ride of vengeance and violence. Added to this is the sleuthing of the justice seekers that keeps the thrill suspenseful while inherently being chillingly fascinating. When the powerful betrays the brave, then terror strikes the deceivers. Based on the book having the same title in the book series by Jack Carr, the narrative starts with a horrifying ambush of almost the entire brotherhood of a battalion of Navy SEALs, led to their doom by false Intelligence, leaving only the fortunates standing. James Reece, the surviving commander of the troop returns home, traumatised. But his ordeal was yet to be over as he starts losing memory and faces sudden assassination attempts. A conflicting scenario presents with one of the other surviving members getting killed at a time when Reece remembers him to be present elsewhere. If that was not all, Reece loses his loved ones, assassinated right at their home.

Thus begins the journey of vengeance with Reece starting on a mission of searching and killing the perpetrators of these heinous incidents. Sinister revelations await that steadily unfurls the chilling motive behind the killings and the twisted villains responsible for the criminal activities. But as Reece tries hammering in the justice his own way, law retaliates. A cat and mouse chase ensues with Reece being hunted by the force of law, backed by specialists in armed combat. Thus the modern day John Rambo aka James Reece (interestingly, both having initials J R) starts on a mission of his own of drawing out the last of the evil bloods, while escaping the enforcers of law that prevents the same. Support comes in the form of Katie Buranek, the determined journalist, set on the mission to unearth the truth behind the doom of the brotherhood and helps unmask secrets, both scary and unabashedly cruel. CIA operative and former SEAL teammate, Ben Edwards chips in with vital intelligence and apparently assists the mission by stalking the targets with precision and preying on them with stealth and surprise.

Chris Pratt stars as James Reece, trying to play the naive soldier turned focused mercenary earnestly yet falling short of the requirement at times. But compensating classically by their acting, Constance Wu as Katie Buranek surely tops the chart and Taylor Kitsch as Ben Edwards follows closely by playing the consistently stubborn and religiously careful yet precariously casual support characters respectively.

A truly entertaining series with 8 part opening season, as created by David Digilio, will surely thrill the audience right till the last in the list of vengeance lasts.
