Mahabharat Murders: মহাকাব্য ও motive

প্রথমে দ্রৌপদী, তারপর সহদেব, নকুল, অর্জুন। না, মহাপ্রস্থানের পথে পতন নয়, হত্যা! যেন একালের কোনো কৌরব কোনো অন্ধ প্রতিহিংসায় তার কল্পনার পাণ্ডবদের নিধন করে চলেছে এক এক করে, মহাকাব্যেরই বর্ণিত যোদ্ধাদের বধ করার ছলে। মৃত ব্যক্তিকে তাই কখনো ভীষ্মের শরাসনে দেখা যায়, কখনো দেখা যায় উড়ুভঙ্গ চেহারায়, তো কখনো শরীরটা ফেলা থাকে জরাসন্ধ বধের অবস্থায়! সঙ্গে দেওয়ালে দুটি ছবি আটকানো থাকে। একটির বিষয় – মহাকাব্যে বর্ণিত চরিত্রটির যাকে উদ্দেশ্য করে খুনটা, আর অন্যটি – এখনকার যুধিষ্ঠির হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত এক আপাতদৃষ্ট সত্যবাদী নেতা ও তার বক্তব্যযুক্ত চিত্র। খুনের কারণ বোঝাটাই দুষ্কর হয়ে ওঠে। তবে কি যুধিষ্ঠিরই তার শেষ লক্ষ্য? নাকি আরো কেউ আছে? খুনের সূত্রপাত দ্রৌপদী দিয়েই হল? নাকি তার আগেও কোনো খুন হয়েছে যার কোনো কিনারা হয়নি? খুনি কি এক না অনেক? এরকম হাজার প্রশ্ন আর জটিলতা ভাবিয়ে তোলে পুলিশ কর্মচারী রুকসানা আহমেদ আর যুধিষ্ঠির হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত নেতা পবিত্র চ্যাটার্জ্জীকে। খুনের এই মহামিছিলের রহস্যভেদ করতে হাতড়াতে হয় অতীতকে। সেখান থেকে উঠে আসে কিছু ভয়ঙ্কর সত্য। বাকিটুকু জানতে দেখতে হবে সৌমিক হালদার পরিচালিত বারো পর্বের এই টানটান উত্তেজনায় ভরা সিরিজ। যেরকম সৌমিক হালদারের পরিচালনা হয়, এরকম জটিলতায় ভরপুর কাহিনী অকারণ গতিময়তার প্রলেপে না মুড়িয়েও টানটান উত্তেজনাটা কাহিনীর শেষ অবধি রেখে যেতে পেরেছেন। এটাই তাঁর সফলতা আর নতুন পরিচালকদের মধ্যে এই জন্য এনার পরিচালনা আমার দারুন লাগে। তার সাথে আছে গল্পের নতুনত্ব। অর্ণব রায় রচিত “The Mahabharat Murders” অবলম্বনে সিজনটি প্রতিহিংসা ও লালসার গতানুগতিক নিয়মে থেকেও এক অনবদ্য মোড় ঘুরিয়ে দেয় কিছু মুখোশের আড়ালে থাকা মানুষদের ও অন্তরালে থাকা ঘটনার অদ্ভুত পরিসমাপ্তি দেখিয়ে। তবে কিছু জিজ্ঞাস্য থেকেই যায় যেগুলো আপাততুচ্ছ লাগতে পারে কিন্তু কাহিনীর সম্পুর্ণতার জন্য যার সংশয়াতীত ব্যাখ্যার থাকাটা কাম্য ছিল। অভিনয়তে প্রিয়াঙ্কা সরকার মুখ্য চরিত্রে বেশ মানিয়ে গেছেন। কিন্তু পার্শ্বচরিত্রে অভিনয় করে সবাইকে ছাপিয়ে গেছেন দেবাশিস মণ্ডল। এই ভদ্রলোক কিন্তু আমার মতে লম্বা দৌড়ের ঘোড়া। চরিত্র মুখ্য হোক কি গৌণ, সে বেদনার হোক কি ক্রুরতার, সবকিছুই তিনি ফুটিয়ে তোলেন স্বচ্ছন্দ সাবলীলতায়। অন্যদিকে শাশ্বত চ্যাটার্জ্জী আর কৌশিক সেনও হালটা শক্ত করে ধরার জন্য গাম্ভীর্যটা বেড়ে গেছে। দ্বিতীয়জনকে দেখছি বয়স বাড়ার সাথে সাথে গুরুগম্ভীর চরিত্রে অভিনয় করলে চেহারায় একটা সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ কাঠিণ্য ফুটিয়ে তুলে আলাদা মাপের অভিনয় উপহার দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন দর্শকদের। আবার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ আরেক চরিত্রে শাশ্বত অসামান্য। অন্যদের মধ্যে পার্শ্বচরিত্রে ঋষভ বাসুর উপস্থিতি ও অভিনয় চোখে পড়ার মতো লেগেছে। মোটকথা, রোমাঞ্চ ও নাটকীয়তায় ভরা কঠোরভাবে প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের জন্য তৈরি জমাটি সিরিজটি অবশ্যই দেখার দাবী রাখে।

Panchayat: the indomitable spirit that continues

Simply outstanding! This is one of the few expressions that comes to the mind after watching the follow up season of this beautifully crafted series. Moments will fleet past as the episodes will mesmerise the audience with a simplicity, hardly seen nowadays. The season is a bouquet of the varied shades that life has to offer, wrapped in emotions, rich in spontaneity yet rooted to reality. Thus while petty conflicts and trivialities wedge a divide between opposing parties in the rural society, a greater cause drives off the wedge firmly and unites them for the sake of the land and for the prestige of her people. Comical moments intersperse with heart wrenching tragedies and both are presented in such a natural way that you will feel the glee of the characters as they laugh and the eyes will turn tearful as they sob.

The season starts with Abhishek Tripathi, the Panchayat secretary still trying for his MBA as he aspires for a better job. But his stay in the village for so long seems to take a toll on his sentiments and he grows to like the villagers and appreciate their original ingrained values, devoid of the artificiality that the urbanites possess. His friendship with the ex-Pradhan, the new Pradhan, her deputy and his own deputy grows strong yet poses some challenge in the way. Conflicting interests stand in the way at times, only to be brushed aside by the understanding and practical thinking with The Providence playing the dice, at times! Sprinkled with humour in just the right proportion, reliefs are there, too, in plenty like CCTV footage being explored to search for lost goat, snake coils around chilled drinks bottles to fend off excessive heat and drunk driver is appointed in a drive against addictions!

There is not much to say about the acting save that each of Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav,  Faisal Malik and Chandan Ray excels and stretch the limits of natural acting with a maturity that might be respectfully remembered for days if not years. Special mention is reserved for Faisal Malik for a specific sequence that will be etched in the memory as contrasting emotions are expressed in a single silent act that swings the mood of the ambience in seconds with a suddenness that only feels natural and never a bit artificially forced. Simplicity prevails in the lilting music by Anurag Saikia who designs the melodies to resonate with the ambience right from the opening score and trims them to suit the needs in the sweetest manner possible. Chandan Kumar writes this fascinating journey through the rustic elegance that remains partly hidden in the urban opulence, revealing the subtle shades of emotions and values among the apparently coarser class. Celebrating the spirit and sentiments of rural India, Deepak Kumar Mishra achieves the rare feat in his own merit by directing a season to fame that maintains, if not surpasses the rich flavour that the predecessor in the series soberly presented.

The Amazon Original, streaming obviously in Prime, is a must watch for matured audiences, young and old and recommended to start from the initial episodes for viewers, yet to watch the opening of the series!

Outer Range: a fleeting glimpse of the elusive void of fate

A sci-fi suspense unfolds in the West pasture of the Abbots, a family that had a strange disappearance and whose current head, Royal Abbot, apparently harbours a dark secret himself. Secrets are plenty in this gripping sci-fi drama that are revealed in phases to give some classic twists to the narrative. There is the sudden appearance of a strange void in the West pasture, which is kept secret from the others by most who come across the apparently bottomless pit. The Tillersons, neighbour to the Abbots and headed by the ambitious Wayne Tillerson holds secrets, one of them being termed ‘impossible’ by him, driving him to crave for acquiring things, not his own, rubbing off  sanity from his soul and the least bit of sympathy from his family. Animals and folks appear in the area from apparently nowhere, a mountain top suddenly disappears from plain sight, but for a few moments and above all, the nature of the void itself is inexplicable to most. Then there is the strangely persuasive Autumn, the camper who seeks permission of Royal for a place on the Abbot grounds but secretly harbours a grievance against the family head, fuelled by what she witnesses and a past that she hides. Twists of fate throws the Abbot family, already distraught with a missing family member, into disarray by the double jeopardy of land encroachment and homicide cases. Trouble brews with the police and the neighbours with ambition and small town politics coming to the fore. Royal has visions of something sinister happening but takes the obstinate stance of saving the ranch and his family against the unwavering destiny. Whether he succeeds or is doomed to fail remains to be seen in this suspenseful drama streaming in Prime, recommended for audience with a matured perspective.

Stylishly created by Brian Watkins in the Western backdrop, the series features science-fiction and drama in a single uncharacteristic mould. Suspense unfolds in Wyoming and continues throughout the opening season but the underlying human emotions significantly contribute to the drama with the fiction of science served, but only for a required necessity. Josh Brolin stars as the fiercely protective rancher, trying to save his cowboy family and his fields from being ripped apart from him. Supporting this character is Lily Taylor as the calm and composed Cecilia, his wife with an unwavering belief in Karma. While Taylor balances the passionate Royal, his obstinately fierce psyche is countered by Imogen Poots as the maddeningly uncompromising yet equally fervent Autumn, a character whose strangeness gets wilder till the stunning twist that reveals a lot but keeps several queries unanswered. Poots undeniably puts up a marvellous performance as Autumn, a character that will be loved and hated by the audience in turn. A follow-up season is obviously expected, accented again by the final scene where a character looks up to a sudden something as the screen goes black. The passion of the ever appealing Western blends uniquely with the modern fiction, refreshing the episodes both by the touch of the classic and the suspense, which continues!
